The AFMC Student Portal

About

The AFMC Student Portal is a project of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC).  The Portal is an online, bilingual service to facilitate the application and placement of medical students for undergraduate visiting electives at the 17 faculties of medicine in Canada.  The AFMC Student Portal services include a searchable database for visiting electives in Canada; an online application process for Canadian and international students; and placement and confirmation tracking tools for elective coordinators at each faculty. 

All schools are currently accepting applications for visiting electives through the Portal.


AFMC Student Portal Registration
Effective Dec. 11, 2017 10:00 AM ET: As approved by the AFMC Board of Directors, there is a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $200 for Canadian Students and $575 for International Students that will be charged to each student who creates an account on the AFMC student portal. All regisration fees are charged in Canadian Dollars (CAD). Fees charged by the faculties of medicine to cover costs for visiting electives are separate. It should be noted that students interested in exploring options for visiting electives can search the AFMC Student Portal’s central database of visiting elective opportunities in Canada for free. The one-time fee is applicable when students sign up to submit applications for visiting electives.* 

*Registrant type is defined by the home school i.e. Canadian student refers to a student whose home school is at a faculty of medicine in Canada and an international student refers to a student whose home school is at a faculty of medicine outside of Canada


Twelve Week Maximum for Students Outside of Canada
The general guideline is a maximum of 12 weeks of visiting electives for undergraduate medical students studying outside of Canada. This is a general guideline (not a regulation) and can be interpreted differently by each medical school (in other words, a school can decide - at its discretion - whether or not they grant elective weeks to a student who has 12 weeks already).

The Help Desk is available Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) 

The AFMC Student Portal Help Desk provides bilingual assistance to students and site administrators with technical issues related to the Portal. All questions regarding elective offerings will be handled by the elective teams at each faculty of medicine; please consult the medical school's institution profile on the Portal for their contact information.

AFMC Student Portal Data on Visiting Electives                  

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) is pleased to present the first edition of the AFMC Student Portal Data on Visiting Electives, National Report and accompanying Methodological Notes. The report captures information on the application and placement of undergraduate medical students entering their clerkship year who are applying through the AFMC Student Portal for away electives at a medical school in Canada. This data collection initiative was guided by the AFMC Student Portal Data Analysis Working Group in consultation with members of the Portal’s primary stakeholder groups – medical students, elective coordinators, and the undergraduate deans of medicine. The goal of the Working Group is to define data collection activities that will support effective policies and procedures related to visiting electives in Canada. A Faculty Report is also compiled for each medical school and released to the Dean of Medicine of each institution. Data are presented at an aggregate level in both reports and represent both Canadian and international applicants.

The National Report offers a view of application and placement activities across all medical schools in Canada and includes a Policy Focus related to a subject deemed by stakeholders to be pertinent to advancing the policy dialogue on visiting electives.

*Note: Fee deferral or exemptions

Registration fees will not be charged to:

A) Medical students from any Medical School located in the province of Quebec applying for a Visiting Elective in another Medical School located in the province of Quebec, the whole in accordance with the agreement between Quebec Medical Schools; However, a registration fee will be charged when a student from any Medical School located in the province of Quebec applies for a visiting elective at another Medical School outside of the province of Quebec.B) Medical students from a foreign medical school applying for a Visiting Elective in any Canadian Medical School, if such medical schools have concluded an agreement (e.g. IFMSA exchange programs with the Medical School). However, a registration fee will be charged when the student applies for a visiting elective at another Medical School.C) Medical students applying for limited enrollment in one of the following circumstances: (i) until the medical students have been selected to apply if they do not have an existing account on the Portal; and (ii) if the medical student is not accepted through limited enrollment, however, registration fees are charged automatically when the student applies for a Visiting Elective at another Medical School where exemptions and deferrals don’t apply.
